Servant of God, Apostle of the Rosary
A zealous priest, never without his Rosary, Father Patrick Peyton, CSC was a man who radiated love for the Blessed Mother.  Although he grew up in a home where the Rosary was prayed as a family daily, his relationship with Our Lady was cemented during his time at seminary.  It was there that he experienced firsthand the tender love, faithfulness and power of Mother Mary when he was cured of advance staged tuberculosis after praying a novena for her intercession.  His thankfulness was expressed in an ardent desire to foster devotion to the Blessed Mother, especially through praying the Rosary.

Prayer at Our Lady’s Grotto
Father Peyton’s first assignment as Chaplain for the Holy Cross Brothers who taught at Vincentian Institute in Albany, provided him with the launch pad he needed to spread his campaign for the daily family Rosary worldwide.  He propagated the message that “the family that prays together, stays together,” however, it was not without Our Lady’s help.  Father Peyton frequently went to the Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto at the Vincentian Institute for his private prayer during the week and on Sunday evenings.  He could be alone there to pray with undisturbed intensity.  Whenever he faced a need, whether it be spiritual or financial, he would turn to her maternal assistance, reminding her of her promise to mankind and her influence with her Son Jesus.  The Lourdes grotto was a special place for Father Peyton, one that beckoned him to prayer.  As his cause for canonization has begun, this grotto would have an even more prominent place in Albany’s Catholic history once restored.  Just as through Fr Patrick Peyton’s example, let this place be a reminder, that never was it known that anyone who sought Our Lady’s intercession was left unaided.

Prayer for the Beatification of the Servant of God Father Patrick Peyton, CSC
Dear Jesus, Father Peyton devoted his priestly life to strengthening the families of the world by calling them to pray together every day, especially the Rosary.  His message is as important for us now as it was during his life on earth.  We beg you, therefore, to hasten the day of his beatification so that your faithful people everywhere will remember his message that the family that prays together stays together, will imitate him in his devotion to your Mother and ours, and will be inspired by his holy life to draw ever closer to you with childlike confidence and love.  Amen.
